"He went overseas to Italy in September 1943, serving with an assault unit (141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division). In February 1944, while fighting in the Cassino area, he received a shrapnel wound in the leg. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster). For gallantry in action in May of 1944 he was honored with the Silver Star Medal. On May 26, 1944, he was promoted to first lieutenant. While practicing firing with others he received a second wound when a bullet fragment lodged in his left arm.
On June 18, 1944, Mills, son of George and Mary (Pool) Mills of Rockport, was killed in action in Italy, according to a telegram received by his wife"
