ok so I get another email from a guy, a father who took the News-Press to task for allowing Peter Lance to misinvestigate Mallory Dies' death...specifically, this dude Rod Kelly wrote to Don Katich...Don calls himself the Director of News Operations at the News-Press...ie chief propagandist...

the exchange was telling and proof that Lance was hired to go after Capps and not write about Mallory Dies...poor Mallory's death is political fodder for the News-Press and Lance and even Mallory's father is on board!! sick
Katich says he's concerned about impaired drivers and you'll notice he won't use the words "drunk drivers"...then he complains with some teabbagger gibberish about "abuse of authority being a clear and present danger to our freedoms" ...

So I sent a letter to the Newspress after seeing the start of Peter Lance's series. Here is the thread with Don Katich, who responded really quickly. I guess I hit a nerve. He sure sounds defensive. As he should.

If you are seeking perfection in the behavior of any reporter or politician for that matter, you are on a long journey.
As a father of a teen, I also could not imagine the loss of her to the selfish actions of others who disregard human life by impaired driving. While any impaired driving in my personal belief is unconscionable, I also find abuse of authority and power, a clear and present threat to our freedoms. The law is not subjective and I will never apologize for stepping on any toes for reporting on those abuses, regardless of part affiliation or relationship.

Mr. Katich,
I would never make light of a family tragedy, and as a father of first grade twins I cannot imagine the emotional devastation wrought by the loss of a child.
I do not know Mr. Lance, other than having caught a bit of his semi-coherent rants on cable access. But surely your co-publisher has another friend who doesn't drink and drive who would be more appropriate as the author of such a series. I would suggest your city editor but he only seems to do character assassinations.

"Oh, but for the grace of God, go I!" should be the lead of each episode of this self serving, holier than thou "news" series by a man who could very well have been the subject, rather than the author. Peter Lance and the reading public would be better served by a more, let's say, modest and introspective view of a truly tragic event. Or perhaps Mr. Lance could explore the roots of such tragedies, such as PTSD or brain trauma on our returning warriors. And above the fold in five parts? Really, Newspress?

Katich has the toughest job in SB and does an amazing job trying to please the mad queen yet run a responsible newspaper. It was unfortunate that Lance didn't do an in depth article on the tragic death of Nipper's son when he returned from rehab. That might have saved some young people from more drug deaths.
Lois and her staff responded as you or I would have - and perhaps made some errors. Would you have them throw him to the wolves?
The victim was Mallory Rae Dies, a 27-year-old woman. Not a "girl" as the News-Press proclaimed in a headline, and not "Mollie" as Don Katich calls her in one of his emails.
I had been wondering if the Peter Lance series was basically a hit piece on Lois Capps. Don Katich's emails confirm it.
Poor Mallory? Poor Lois? How about poor Raymond?
How do a writer and a DUI lawyer team up and release privileged information like texts, bills and phone calls, taking them to the press even BEFORE said lawyer's client has even entered a plea? Is that even ethical? Was Raymond coerced into pleading guilty so the publicity-hungry team could quickly release their story to the press? Did the desire to rush this poorly-crafted story to the press see Raymond thrown under the bus? Was his guilty plea influenced behind the scenes by Lance so he could his story quickly to press? I am saddened that this gravely serious matter in this young man's life was turned into a circus to rush a thin-disguised political hit piece into print. I think Morua needs to talk to another lawyer. I think the judge should examine this process that was motivated by this duo of Lance and Gennis.
The Lance series has gone viral all over the world. It's really humorous to see people from afar--who have no clue as to Lance and his background--commenting on how awful is Capps and such, as if Capps' culpability for Morua's actions had already been tried and proven in court. Well, I guess that is all the info that is out there--since no one has written a story on this that even attempts journalistic objectivity.
