Cheryl's Goin' Home....

and so am I about 11 pm....after the show at the Carp Plaza Theater....Danny O'Keefe and Bob Lind played to almost 50 people...

just two guitars and two guys doing some songs....probably not a great idea to do a show on Memorial Day weekend in an obscure little theater in an obscure little beach town, but we got a good show and the people were pretty noisy and appreciative..wow! we had the whole place to ourselves! I've never been to the Plaza theater and it's pretty cool....old school, comfy seats with cup holders...and a great view of the stage..like a mini Lobero!

oh, the News-Press did a story on the guys prior to tonight but said they would be at the Santa Barbara Bowl on June1st at 4 pm!

O'Keefe started his set at 8pm and for about an hour and a half, I was pretty amazed at this guy...he started with So Long Harry Truman and ended with Good Time Charlie....in between there was The Road and other stone beauties....superb guitarist and in good voice, O'Keefe told some stories and seemed almost relieved the crowd was small...there was banter back and forth between the guys and the audience that was pretty funny....

and there was nothing fancy here except the guitars...no smoke rising from the stage, no fire breathing nonsense a la KISS, no dancing naked girls....just music...the kind that very few can approach...

Lind came on after O'Keefe and said he was thrilled to be doing a little tour with Danny...his first song was marred by an out-of -tune guitar....a pesky Martin D-28 so Lind changed over to another box..then came back and lamented about out-of-tune guitars...finally he got the expensive Martin tuned up and picked up steam after that...both these guys put on a songwriting clinic..I couldn't believe some of the lyrics I was hearing....that's why I fell in love with their songs, they communicated exactly what I felt but couldn't quite say when I was coming of age....even now the new stuff is wonderful...

it was like watching Robert Frost and ee cummings with a guitar..it was lovely!! Lind did "Elusive Butterfly" near the end and I was singing right along with everyone else...

after the show, Lind hung out in the lobby to greet people...his and O'Keefe's CDs were on sale..these are still working class guys who made tons of money in their prime writing songs for other people...I've been a fan for a long time and they are in their 60s now, yet they stilled loved getting up and singing in front of a small crowd....and I got Lind to sign a CD and spoke with him about the early days with Jack Nitzsche and the Springfield... I felt like a freaking kid!! if I was a chick, I woulda been a good groupie!

walking thru the doors of the Plaza Theater is like stepping back in time....here's hoping it will continue to bring such talent...people like Lind and O'Keefe are a joy to watch in such an intimate setting...give it time....give it time...it's just something you can't forget...like Cheryl goin' home
